Why Screenwriting Takes Passion, Perseverance, and Patience Part 3: The Long Game of Screenwriting

In the world of screenwriting, patience is perhaps the hardest skill to master. After all, you’ve poured your heart into writing your script, rewritten it several times, and have been submitting it to contests, producers, or agents. But then comes the hardest part—waiting.

Patience & Screenwriting

The reality of the entertainment industry is that it moves slowly, often much slower than we’d like. Even after a script is picked up, it can take years before it’s developed, produced, and makes it to the screen. But here’s the thing: the slow pace doesn’t mean your work isn’t valued or that it won’t pay off. In fact, many screenwriters wait years before their breakthrough project sees the light of day. Patience is what helps you endure this waiting period without losing hope or motivation.

Patience isn’t about passively sitting by and waiting for success to come to you. It’s about continuing to write, continuing to improve, and continuing to believe in your journey, even when there’s no immediate reward. Patience is trusting the process and understanding that each step you take—whether it's attending workshops, revising your scripts, or networking—is bringing you closer to your goal.

What makes patience so important is that screenwriting success often comes after long periods of unseen effort. You might not get the big deal after your first or second script. But each of those scripts is part of your learning curve. Each one brings you closer to mastering your craft. Every connection you make, every bit of feedback you receive, is part of the journey. Patience is what allows you to see the bigger picture and trust that, with time, your work will find its way to the right hands.

So, as you continue to hone your skills, submit your work, and dream big, remember that screenwriting is a marathon, not a sprint. If you stay patient and keep the passion and perseverance we talked about earlier, you’ll eventually see the payoff.
