World-building doesn’t just apply to fantasy or sci-fi. Even if your story takes place in the “real world,” you need to create a setting that feels authentic and lived-in. Ask yourself, what’s the atmosphere? What’s the social context? What history does this world have that affects your characters?

Tip: Be sure to develop rules for your world. This is especially important in genres like fantasy, where consistency in magic systems or futuristic technology is key. And don’t forget – world-building isn’t just about landscapes and cities, it’s about the culture, tone, and emotional setting, too.
